Over the past few summers, I’ve been very active with urban farming and documenting the progress of my crops. It started out as a small hobby and I've become more serious as the years have gone by. It’s been interesting to see how plants thrive in an urban setting if proper care is provided to them. I've been amazed at what I've been able to grow, as well as the amount of fruit / vegetables I've harvested from these plants. Throughout these studies, I’ve seen differences in growth based on soil types, seed origins, sun exposure and what month the seeds are planted. Its been very rewarding to say the least. I've greatly cut back on purchasing vegetables from the local market and I also have a better sense of my food's sourcing.
To date, I've successfully grown the following crops:
Scarlet Purple Kale
Bangkok Thai Chili Pepper
Hungarian Wax Pepper
Pink Bumblebee Tomato
Gold Nugget Tomato
Basil ( Lime / Regular )
Watermelon ( yes, nyc watermelon )
I'll be sure to follow-up with additional posts regarding urban farming, as well as how I've incorporated the harvests into recipes and dinners. More to come here!
