Advanced ActionScript Programming Course

December 22nd, 2006

Parsons New School

Wrapped up another semester of teaching at Parsons School of Design.

Advanced Flash Programming is a course that studies the core fundamentals of ActionScript programming from the basics up through the complex build process. The class is taught from a real world perspective that not only focuses on the techniques of the build, but also on the process itself. With a series of weekly exercises leading up to the final project of the semester : a fully dynamic mini sitelet, students have the opportunity to enhance both their strategic and creative thinking skills along the way.

Students encounter multiple levels of actionscript coding through weekly exercises. During these exercises the class is exposed to XML, managing external .as files, basic prototypes, handling components, working with the drawing api, and how to integrate audio/video into a Flash. The class touches upon these topics as it discusses how to develop a proper site architecture, manage a site’s image treatment, design a site’s motion treatment, and develop a proper user GUI. Lab sessions and individual Q/A sessions with students also allow for further explorations in these areas.
